On Tuesday, November 12, families in Orange County enrolled in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) health and nutrition program received the new California WIC card. The WIC card replaced the paper checks that had been issued to WIC families for their nutritious food benefits.
The WIC card will make it easier for families to shop for their WIC foods and get what they need at each shopping trip. Families are assigned a reusable card with a pin number, similar to a debit card. Families will not lose their WIC food benefits if their WIC card is lost, stolen or damaged. The new WIC card will help improve shopping for WIC families and grocers.
WIC is a health and nutrition program for pregnant women, new moms, infants and children under five. WIC provides:
- Nutrition information and every day healthy living tips for you and your family
- Support and information about breastfeeding your baby
- Healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, milk, eggs, bread, cereal, juice, peanut butter, soy milk, tofu and more
- Help in finding healthcare and other community services
