Portion Control 101

Being aware of the amount and sizes of the foods you eat can help you consume less calories, manage your weight, and live a healthier lifestyle. Whether you’re eating out or dining at home, knowing about portion control can come in handy. Take a look below for a few simple tips to help you stay on top of portion control.

Split your meal

Restaurants often serve meals that can feed more than one person. You might even be served enough food to have left-overs for another day. One way to practice portion control is to split your meal in half. You can choose to eat half of your meal right away and share the other portion with a friend or family member. Another tip is to ask your server to box up half of your meal for you, so that you can save it for later.

Avoid over snacking

Snacking or eating while watching a TV favorite is quite common. However, this habit can often lead to overeating while being distracted. Instead of taking an entire bag of chips to snack on, pour the amount that you plan to eat into a bowl or container. This can help you to eat a healthy sized portion and avoid the temptation to overeat.

Out of sight, out of mind

Did you know that people tend to eat more when they have easy access to food?(CDC) This can be a good and a bad thing. Keep your home “portion friendly” by storing the tempting food items like cookies and chips out of eye sight. A good place for these items is on a high shelf or in the back of the cabinet. Replace these items with healthier items like fruits and vegetables that can be kept in the front the cabinet or on top of the kitchen counter.
