What’s in Season This Summer?


With summer here, now is the perfect time to start loading your shopping carts with in season fruits and vegetables. Orange County farmer’s markets are great places to shop for produce and many vendors offer samples for you to taste. At home, try adding these fruits and veggies to your favorite dishes to create meals worth remembering. Take a look at the list below for summertime seasonal inspirations.

Did you know plum trees were brought to California from Asia in the 1870’s? Plums are a good source of Vitamin C. When shopping for plums, avoid those that are discolored and bruised. Also, look for soft spots. A soft spot can mean that a plum is mushy and might be rotten.

Peaches are a summertime staple and can be eaten fresh, canned, or frozen. It can also be added to many of your favorite dishes for a sweet and tropical taste. You can try your hand at making these peach bran muffins, or cool off with a peach banana smoothie. Peaches give you plenty of nutrients including fiber, as well as Vitamins A and C.

Lima beans are available fresh or canned. When shopping for lima beans, choose either dried lima beans that are firm and clean or canned lima beans with reduced amounts of sodium. Beans in general offer so much nutritional value. Lima beans are high in fiber and a good source of potassium.

Bell Peppers

Adding bell peppers to your meals instantly adds color and can help you fuel your body with vitamins and nutrients. This vegetable is available in a variety of colors including: green, yellow, red, and orange. When buying bell peppers, choose the ones that are firm, brightly colored, and do not have wrinkled skin. Bell peppers can be stored in a bowl at room temperature, or in the refrigerator for up to five days.
